DRIUS is a 2 year innovation project funded by the European Community's Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP/2007-2013).
The main objective of this project is to implement in the market new micro-irrigation systems that are 100% compostable, as a solution to manage the plastic and the green waste in a composting plant at the end of the crop period. The new system will not require the separation or the burning of the pipes and green waste.
Alhtough due to the environmental benefits this micro-irrigation system is interesting for each farmer, it can be of particular interest of organic farmers. These farmers are aware of the advantages of compost with regard to soil fertility, soil structure (aeration, tillability), water management and plant root penetration. Therefore composting is often performed at their own fields. The use of this compostable micro-irrigation system allows them to reduce labor cost and converse the system by themselves.
Four companies are working together to obtain this goal: the Spanish company Extruline Systems, the Israeli enterprise Metzerplas, the Spanish research organization AIMPLAS (Technological Institute of Plastics) and the Belgian company OWS nv, as coordinator.
